We all know that the Energizer Bunny keeps going and going and going… He seems to have an endless energy source to be able to do this. So what can we do, as overwhelmed, overworked and underappreciated people to get even a fraction of the Bunny’s energy?
When you are under extreme stress and pressure, in order to take care of yourself, you have to have a way to be renewed regularly. Unlike the Bunny, we have to actively seek to renew our energy.
So, what does it mean, to be renewed?
When I did a dictionary search for renewed, I got quite a few definitions. Here are two of those definitions:
- to make effective for an additional period, like renewing a library book.- We want to make sure that we get renewed so we have a later due, date (or expiration date!)
- to restore or replenish, as in the charge in a battery- We need to do things to restore our life, our energy
4 ways to renew our energy
1. Water, water, water
Research shows that 75% of people in developed countries are chronically dehydrated. What are some symptoms of dehydration?
- lack of mental focus
Sounds like a lot of the same symptoms of stress, burnout and depression. Now, I am not saying you can prevent all of this JUST by drinking water, but it is very possible that some of your physical issues could be attributed to not drinking enough water.
If you are thirsty, you are already mildy dehydrated. Come up with a system to make sure you are drinking AT LEAST 64 oz. a day, but preferably more, especially if you exercise.
Be sure that you make time for connecting with someone you love each day. Send your spouse off with a kiss and hug, and the same for your kids. Connect with friends regularly, and be real with them.
3. The sound of music
I love music. Music is in our bones, it has a way of soothing the soul, as well as energizing your mood. Find some music you love and get it on your digital device, crank it up and listen to it to get you going in the morning, or play something a little more mellow in the evening to calm you down. We have SO many options available to us nowadays.
My *low-tech* way of enjoying music and using it to be renewed is finding YouTube music videos I enjoy. And I love to share them on Facebook with my fans!
4. Get up and MOVE
I know we already talked about exercise, but here I am really just talking about getting up and moving around. As for myself, I could sit at my laptop all day, but that is not good for me, body or soul. So, I try to make myself get up at the top of every hour. I take the dogs out, I might load the dishwasher, sweep the porch, switch out the laundry, etc. The main thing is to just get moving for a few minutes. It really helps me to be able to focus when I get back to work.
